Frequently Asked Questions about Paddle The Petaluma: Turn to The River

  • No—this is fully beginner friendly! We’ll be in sit-on-top kayaks on calm water. We’ll instruct you on paddling and maneuvering. We only paddle about a mile and a half, total.

  • Comfortable clothes, layers, and sunscreen and/or a hat if it’s sunny out. You may get slightly splashed, but we do teach you how to avoid that!

  • Usually just a little, but this is a calm, gentle paddle, and we’ll teach you how to avoid splashing yourself.

  • Yes! Our sit-on-top kayaks are extremely stable, the water is calm, and you’ll be with our guide the whole time. And, as per California law, PFDs are provided and required.

  • Totally fine. Many people do, and we’ll pair you up with another solo guest or you may be in your own kayak.

  • There is no age limit per se. We’ll spend 90 minutes on the water in sit-on-top kayaks designed for adults , although we do have smaller kayaks for smaller adults or kids aged 10-15 who can paddle solo. The tour content is designed for adults but we have fun facts and cool historical photos to share. We have also designed a teen-centered version of this tour.     The fine print: Our kid policy is as follows:

    • Kids under 10 can ride along with a parent or legal guardian in most of our boats (just check the passenger limits for each one).

    • Ages 10–15 can paddle their own boat as long as an adult is out on the water with them.
      If you're 16 or 17, you're good to go solo.

    • Anyone under 18 needs a waiver signed by a parent or guardian before hitting the water.

  • The Floathouse floats on docks right downtown in Petaluma, California. Everything you need is there! Find us by using 50 Water Street as your GPS destination. We’re just down the ramp, accessible from the cobblestone street between Jupiter Foods and Central Market, and visible from the Balshaw footbridge. Park downtown or in one of the parking garages (C Street is a good one!)

    Full refund if we cancel:
    If we have to cancel due to weather or river conditions (our call, for safety), you’ll get a full refund or credit—your choice.

    Full refund if you cancel early:
    Cancel more than 24 hours in advance, and you can also choose a full refund or credit.

    No refund for late cancellations:
    If you cancel less than 24 hours before your rental, we can’t offer a refund or credit—but you’re welcome to send someone else in your place (as long as they meet any skill or age requirements).
